Σήμερα, Δευτέρα 13 Ιουνίου, λαμβάνει χώρα στο Ίδρυμα Ευγενίδου το Συμπόσιο για την Αναγέννηση της Ελληνικής Ναυπηγό-Επισκευαστικής Βιομηχανίας (The Rebirth of the Greek Ship-building and Ship repair Industry).
Η Ελλάδα είναι ναυτική χώρα από την αρχαιότητα και η κληρονομιά αυτή είναι ζωντανή στη σύγχρονη εποχή. Η ναυτιλία είναι ένας από τους πυλώνες της ελληνικής οικονομίας συνεισφέροντας περίπου 7,5 % του ακαθάριστου εγχώριου προϊόντος στην Ελλάδα. Δυστυχώς , το ίδιο δεν μπορεί να ειπωθεί για την κάποτε ακμάζουσα Ελληνική Ναυπηγό-Επισκευαστική Βιομηχανία. Ελληνικά ναυπηγεία, που κάποτε λειτουργούσαν με δύο ή τρεις βάρδιες την ημέρα, έχουν καταλήξει τώρα οι εργαζόμενοι να θεωρούνται τυχεροί εάν παίρνουν 30 βάρδιες σε ένα χρόνο . Μέχρι και τα τέλη τις δεκαετίας του 1980 οι εργαζόμενοι στο Πέραμα δούλευαν σε δύο ή τρεις βάρδιες την ημέρα για να μπορέσουν να ανταποκριθούν στη ζήτηση.
